  • Statutory Testing 2024

Next week sees the start of the statutory tests (SAT's) set by the Government for our Year 6 pupils. The Year 6 tests begin on Monday 13th May and last until Thursday 16th May. The children will be tested in Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, Reading and Maths. Our staff and children have worked very hard to prepare for these tests and we would like to ask our Year 6 parents to please ensure that your child is well rested, preferably with early nights, and are punctual for school each day. During SAT’s week Year 6 are invited into school from 8.15am each morning for breakfast. Children can enter school from the bottom gate on Netherby Drive. From this year, there is no requirements for how schools use the optional KS1 tests. The tests have been designed for pupils in Year 2 who have completed the relevant KS1 programme of study, are moving on to KS2 and will reach the age of 7 by the end of the academic year 2023 to 2024. At English Martyrs’ we will administer these tests during our whole school assessment week straight after half term; replacing the usual test the pupils undertake termly. However, these SAT’s only give us a snapshot of each child’s ability on that day, they do not recognise, nor celebrate, what makes each of our children special and unique. We know that our children will do their very best and no matter what the test outcomes are, we at English Martyrs school all know our children’s individual talents and gifts and rejoice in their awesomeness! Thank you to our parents and carers for supporting their children during this time. Prayer for our children during SAT's God our Father, as our pupils begin this time of tests, they may feel some anxiety and frustration. Help them to stay focused. Give them a clear mind to perform to the best of their ability. Grant them silence so that they may process the knowledge they have obtained. Let them sleep peacefully at night, so that they are refreshed and renewed. Be with them, Lord, during this time. Undoubtedly, there will be moments when they want to quit and give up. Please sustain them, Lord. Calm their nerves and anxiety, Guide them during times of trouble and self-doubt. Help them to realize that they have done my best possible work. Thank you for the many talents and gifts you have given them and for the opportunity of education. Help them to never doubt my own awesomeness. Amen.

  • Return of Family Breakfast

Dear Parents/Carers Those of you who have been part of English Martyrs’ family for some time, may remember our ‘Family Breakfasts’ which were held in school on a Friday morning. The family breakfast mornings were very popular among our school community and we enjoyed serving delicious hot breakfasts to children, parents, carers, grandparents, and other family members as well as some of our staff! Unfortunately, due to COVID, we had to stop the breakfast events back in 2020. However, feedback from our parent survey, earlier in the year, showed that there would be an interest in re-introducing our breakfast sessions. We would therefore like to re-launch our breakfast mornings, hosting a family breakfast event on Friday 24th May (last day of half term). This would take place in the school dining hall and would run from 8am until around 8.45am (last orders taken at 8.30am). Gates to the lower Netherby Drive (KS2) entrance will be opened just before 8am. There will be no access via the school office. Children must have an adult with them to join the family breakfast Please note – if your child currently attends our school-based breakfast provision, they can attend as normal on this day. A sample menu is provided below. We aim to keep costs as low as possible, ensuring our breakfasts are not only delicious but also affordable too. Breakfast Sandwiches: Bacon, Sausage, Egg (Vegetarian options available Scrambled egg on toast Beans on toast Cereals Toast / Bagels (With butter/Jam) Tea/Coffee (adults) Juice/Water/Milk Selection of Fruit In order to gauge numbers for ordering purposes, please could you complete the expression of interest form by clicking the link below. • OPAL Re-Launch - Donations Required

Dear Parents/ Carers As many of you will know, last year – we were awarded the Platinum OPAL award for our commitment to providing exciting and fun play at lunchtimes. We know how popular OPAL is, with our pupils and how many benefits we see from those who take part. As the weather begins to improve, as we move towards Spring – we are looking to relaunch our full OPAL offer in school. In order for this to happen, we rely on the generous donations of pre-loved toys and equipment from parents/carers and the wider school community. To make our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) project successful, we will be looking to start collecting ‘loose parts’. These are things that can be moved, changed, combined and incorporated into children’s free play. The following items are required currently: Plastic or metal buckets Pallets Kitchen utensils, pots, pans, baking trays, sieves, colanders etc for the mud kitchen Watering cans, wheel barrows & guttering Large pieces of fabric for den building e.g. sheets/curtains/tarpaulin Brooms. Decorating paintbrushes Nets and ropes Suitcases/briefcases Cable drums Bamboo poles/plastic piping Picnic Blankets We also welcome Dressing up clothes Small world toys (cars, dinosaurs, farm animals, dolls) Bikes and scooters (in safe working order) Prams/buggies/pushchairs Please do not donate anything unless it is in a useable condition as we will be checking everything that has been donated and if it is not suitable, we won’t be using it with the children. Any donations can be dropped off by the OPAL shed (Located between the Netherby Drive gates) during drop off/pick up times. If you have any of these materials in large quantities and can donate them to school but are unable to make the scheduled drop off times, please contact the office and we will make alternative arrangements. Additionally, if you work for a company or a trade and are able to supply us with additional resources that we could use, we would be very grateful. Thank you for your continued support

  • New Bike / Scooter Shelter

Dear Parent/Carer Some of you may be aware that we have installed a new bike and scooter storage shelter at the  'Top Gate' entrance of Netherby Drive. We are aware that many pupils come to school on their scooters and bikes and want to ensure that they are kept safe. This will also ensure that personal bikes and scooters do not get mixed in with our OPAL bikes and scooters. Please could all bikes and scooters be stored in the shelter from next week (29/1/24) rather than being left against the fences. Although our gates are always locked, we must remind parents and carers that all bikes and scooters are left at the owner's risk and we would advise that children use a bike lock to secure their bike/scooter. Regards SLT

  • Parent / Carer Code of Conduct Jan 24

Dear Parents/Carers Please see below a reminder of our Code of Conduct for Parents and Carers. Unfortunately, last term we had a few incidents where parents/carers behaviour fell short of our expectations. As stated in the Code of Conduct, at English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School, we are committed to a respectful, communicative and mutually supportive relationship between parents/carers and staff. This guide outlines the expectations that apply to all parents and carers in our school, and helps to prevent misunderstandings and any situations blowing out of control so we can everyone continue to flourish, progress and achieve in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect. Code of Conduct for Parents/Carers - Jan 2024 A guide to supporting you and your child successfully through school At English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School, we are committed to a respectful, communicative and mutually supportive relationship between parents/carers and staff. As a partnership, our parents/carers will understand the importance of a good working relationship to equip children with the necessary skills for adulthood. For these reasons we continue to welcome and encourage parents/carers to participate fully in the life of our school. This guide outlines the rules that apply to all parents and carers in our school.  Our aim is to provide you with a framework that sets out the expected conduct and helps prevent misunderstandings and any situations blowing out of control so we can continue to flourish, progress and achieve in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect. The essentials: * Make sure your child arrives to school on time and is picked up promptly (if appropriate); or let us know if you are running late or if your child is going home with someone else. * Complete all consent, contact and medical forms and inform us straight away if anything changes. * Make sure your child has the right clothing for any activity they are involved in. * Maintain a good relationship with your child’s class teacher and attend workshops, school events and parent updates wherever possible or re-arrange if necessary to share information about your child’s development. * Talk to us if you have any concerns about any part of your child’s education and development – we want to hear from you. * If you have a concern and wish to make a formal complaint, please ensure that you correctly follow the school’s policies and complaint procedures. The school expects parents and carers to: +Respect the caring ethos of the school +Understand that parents and teachers need to work together for the benefit of our children +Demonstrate in their own behaviour that all members of the school community should be treated with respect and therefore set a good example in their own speech and behaviour +Understand that even if there is conflict due to a member of staff’s oversight, parents must remain calm and respectful and be mindful that we are all working together for the child’s best interests +Approach school staff to inform them of any issue and allow them to help resolve issues +Work with the school to build relationships with its staff +Know that children cannot be moved classes on request of the parent +Seek to clarify a child’s version of events with the school’s view in order to bring about a peaceful solution to any issue +Correct their own child’s behaviour, especially where it could lead to conflict +Avoid using staff as threats to reprimand children In order to support a peaceful and safe school environment the school does not tolerate: × Disruptive behaviour which interferes or threatens to interfere with the operation of a classroom, office or other area of school grounds × Loud or offensive language, swearing, cursing or displaying temper × Threatening to do actual bodily harm to a member of school staff, governor, visitor, parent/carer or pupil × Damaging or destroying school property × Sending abusive or threatening emails, text/voicemail/phone messages or other written communication × Defamatory, offensive or derogatory comments regarding the school or any of the pupils/parents/staff at the school on Facebook, WhatsApp or other social media sites × The use of physical aggression towards another adult or child. This includes physically punishing your own child on school premises × Chastising someone else’s child × Smoking, vaping or consuming alcohol or drugs whilst on school property × Bringing dogs onto the school premises We want you and your child to enjoy the best possible educational experience they can.  Being aware of our school’s expectations will help you to do that. We expect all parents/carers to follow the expected behaviour and requests set out in this document. If any parent/carers behave in a way which contradicts this code of conduct, we will address the problem at the earliest opportunity and aim to resolve the issue. This may result in parents/carers being issued with a Warning Letter. Persistent concerns or breaches may result in banning the offending adult from entering school grounds. This is something we never want to do but the welfare and safety of children and adults on our school site is paramount. Inappropriate use of Social Network Sites Defamatory, offensive or derogatory comments regarding the school or any of the pupils/parent/staff at the school should not be aired on Facebook, WhatsApp or other social sites: Any concerns you may have about the school must be made through the appropriate channels by speaking to the class teacher, the Head teacher or the Chair of Governors, so they can be dealt with fairly, appropriately and effectively for all concerned. In the event that any pupil or parent/carer of a child/ren being educated at English Martyrs’ school is found to be posting libellous or defamatory comments on Facebook or other social network sites, they will be reported to the appropriate 'report abuse' section of the network site. All social network sites have clear rules about the content which can be posted on the site and they provide robust mechanisms to report contact or activity which breaches this. The school will also expect that any parent/carer or pupil removes such comments/ material immediately. In serious cases the school will also consider its legal options to deal with any such misuse of social networking and other sites. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly is the issue of cyber bullying and the use by one child or a parent to publicly humiliate another by inappropriate social network entry. We will take and deal with this as a serious incident of school bullying. Thankfully such incidents are extremely rare. We would expect that parents would make all persons responsible for collecting children aware of this policy. Dress and Appearance We expect all adults accessing our site to dress appropriately at all times. Please avoid clothing that may be viewed as offensive, revealing, sexually provocative, display contentious slogans and so on. Photographs, Videos and Images Photographs and videos should only be taken under the direction of senior leaders within the school with the subject being your child. No electronic equipment should be used whilst in school. This includes mobile phones, cameras and iPad’s. All equipment should be switched off whilst in school. School Security Adults on site must sign in and wear a visible visitor’s badge.  Those without an enhanced DBS will be supervised at all times.
